We know that drawing board specification does not always match the actualities of the real-world product. This is especially relevant when relating to marine platforms. Compromises and unexpected challenges can arise from any project. Factors include material properties under stress, subtle manufacturing tolerances, and even surrounding elements of a vessel.
Modernising the Ministry of Defence Police Fleet
Zodiac Milpro is supplying the MDP with new Intercept and Escort Craft RIBs as part of a contract aimed at modernising their maritime security capabilities. ASL GRP’s expertise was enlisted to aid in the design and manufacture of bespoke, removable ballistic protection panel kits for these new patrol RIBs.
Key challenges stated in the RFQ included ensuring each individual panel did not exceed 25kg, yet still retaining the appropriate protection level.
Advanced composite solutions for the lightest weight protection
ASL GRP’s Legion Polyethylene was used as the core material for the protection panels. Legion Polyethylene offers a significantly lighter density in comparison to armoured steel. This resulted in a protection kit panels weighing in under 40kg. Easily meeting the stringent 25kg per panel weight restriction, but still offering substantial performance benefits for the high-speed vessels.
The protection kits comprise of further features such as overlap protection for panel gaps and sliding/rotating ballistic panels made from 6mm steel to cover latch access holes while maintaining full frontal coverage.
We worked with a combination of client drawings, templating and our own understanding the practicalities of armouring similar vessels. We delivered a custom-engineered, robust, and lightweight ballistic solution. The ASL GRP kit ensures optimal crew safety without compromising the operational agility of the MDP’s vital new fleet.
